He was a volunteer with Knoxville Museum of Art, and an avid member of the Knoxville Fine Arts and Music Community. He was retired and enjoying life with his family and friends, his art and his music. He was an accomplished artist, a painter, especially water color. He was also a founding member of the East Tennessee Jazz Society and a long-time volunteer at Knoxville Museum of Art's "Alive After Five". His financial contribution helped secure an improved sound system at KMA, and he sponsored the "Alive into 2006!" New Year's Eve party there. Without his support it is very unlikely that the "Hard KnoxBlues Bash" of 2006 would have ever happened, either. He enjoyed playing piano, and even more so, he enjoyed going out to hear and support live music, in a variety of venues. He will especially be missed at "Alive After Five" and at Coyote Joe's where he rarely missed a Thursday Night Blues Jam hosted by Jenna & The Joneses, and he would encourage you all to do the same. While you're out there, enjoying the endless variety of music available in Knoxville, that Al loved & enjoyed lift a glass in his honor. Saturday, January 26, 6-9 pm, a special Musical Tribute to celebrate the memory of Al Schmidt, took place in the Great Hall of the KMA of Art, featuring an all-star line-up. I hope all of you who knew Al, were able to attend this evening, to bid a sad, but fond farewell to a wonderful man we're all going to miss. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to KMA, 1050 World's Fair Park Drive, Knoxville, TN 37916. Mr. Schmidt's guestbook can be browsed & signed online @ www.highlandmemorialparks.com |
